The Best Upright Vacuum (UK, 2026)

If you want one vacuum to deep-clean a carpeted home, buy a corded upright with lift-away and anti-hair-wrap, and the Shark is our pick. A corded upright gives you unlimited runtime, a big bin and the strong, constant suction that deep-cleans carpet properly, and this Shark adds two things that fix the upright's usual weaknesses: a lift-away canister that detaches for stairs and above-floor cleaning, and an anti-hair-wrap brush that stops hair tangling. For big or heavily carpeted homes, it is the dependable deep-clean choice.

If you want to spend less, Vax makes excellent-value uprights with long reach, including pet versions, from around £70; and a Hoover lift-away is a strong pet-and-stairs option. But if your home is small, mostly hard floors, or you value grab-and-go convenience over outright deep-clean power, a cordless stick may suit you better (see our cordless guide). Below we explain lift-away, bagged versus bagless, and why you should ignore the kPa suction numbers.

Upright (corded) or cordless?

  • Corded upright: the deep-clean workhorse. Unlimited runtime, a big bin and strong, constant suction that cordless cannot sustain, ideal for large, heavily carpeted homes and proper deep cleans. The downside is dragging a cable between sockets, and the weight.
  • Cordless stick: grab-and-go convenience, light and easy for quick cleans and stairs, but with finite runtime, a smaller bin and usually less sustained power.

Choose a corded upright if you have a big carpeted home, want the most powerful deep clean, and do not want to watch a battery. Choose cordless if your home is smaller or mostly hard floors and convenience matters more than outright deep-clean power. Plenty of homes have both: an upright for the weekly deep clean, a cordless for daily tidy-ups.

Why lift-away matters

The classic weakness of an upright is stairs and above-floor cleaning, lugging a heavy upright up the stairs or onto a sofa is awkward. Lift-away (also called 2-in-1) fixes this: the canister and motor detach from the floor head so you carry just the lightweight part, with the hose and tools, up the stairs, onto furniture and out to the car.

  • If you have stairs, a car to clean, or lots of above-floor work, lift-away is well worth having, it removes most of the hassle that puts people off uprights.
  • If your cleaning is mostly flat, open carpet, a long-reach hose covers much of the same ground and a full lift-away matters less.

Bagged or bagless?

  • Bagless: empties into a bin you tip out, so there are no bags to buy. Cheaper to run, but emptying can be dusty and messy, and you need to clean or replace the filters regularly to keep suction up.
  • Bagged: dust collects in a bag you remove and bin whole, which is more hygienic and far better for allergy sufferers, as you do not get a cloud of dust when emptying. The ongoing cost is buying bags.

For most people bagless is cheaper and fine. If anyone in the home has allergies or asthma, bagged is the more hygienic choice because you seal and bin the dust without exposure. Either way, good filtration (HEPA) matters for trapping fine dust rather than puffing it back out.

Our picks in detail

Best Overall★ Top Pick4.7

Shark Corded Upright Vacuum with Lift-Away (Anti-Hair-Wrap)

Strong corded deep-clean suction, a detachable lift-away canister for stairs, and anti-hair-wrap: the upright most people should buy.

A best-selling Shark upright.

Shark Corded Upright Vacuum Cleaner with Lift-Away Technology

The Shark lift-away upright is the corded vacuum most people should buy. It has the strong, constant suction and big bin that deep-clean carpet properly, with no battery to watch, and it fixes the two things people dislike about uprights. The lift-away canister detaches so you can carry just the motor and hose up the stairs and onto sofas, instead of lugging a whole upright, and the anti-hair-wrap brush stops hair tangling around the roller, which is the standout feature for pet and long-hair homes.

It is corded, so you swap plug sockets as you move through the house, and an upright is heavier than a cordless stick. But for genuine deep cleaning of carpets with unlimited runtime, that is the trade you are choosing, and the lift-away removes most of the stairs hassle. If your home is small or mostly hard floors, a cordless is comfier; for a big, carpeted, pet-friendly home that needs proper deep cleaning, this is the workhorse to buy.

What we like

  • Strong, constant deep-clean suction
  • Lift-away canister for stairs and above-floor
  • Anti-hair-wrap brush for pets
  • Unlimited runtime, big bin

What we'd change

  • Corded, so you swap sockets
  • Heavier than a cordless stick

Buy this if: you want proper deep-clean power with lift-away for stairs and anti-hair-wrap.

Best Value4.5

Vax Air Stretch Pet Max Upright Vacuum

A long-reach, pet-friendly corded upright from a trusted brand for around £99.

Vax Air Stretch Pet Max Corded Upright Vacuum Cleaner

The Vax Air Stretch Pet Max is the value pick: a capable corded upright with a long-stretch hose that reaches right up stairs and into high corners without moving the machine, plus pet tools for hair, all for around £99. Vax is a long-established UK vacuum brand, and this delivers strong carpet cleaning and genuinely useful reach at a price well below the premium machines, which makes it a lot of upright for the money.

It does not have a full lift-away canister or Shark's premium anti-hair-wrap system, so for heavy pet shedding the Shark is worth the extra. But the long-reach hose covers a lot of the stairs-and-above-floor problem, and for general carpet deep cleaning in a home without extreme pet hair it is excellent value. If you want the best pet and stairs experience, step up to the Shark; for an affordable, trusted, capable upright, this is the smart buy.

What we like

  • Long-stretch hose for stairs and corners
  • Pet tools included
  • Trusted brand, around £99

What we'd change

  • No full lift-away canister
  • No premium anti-hair-wrap system

Buy this if: you want a capable, long-reach pet upright without spending much.

Best Budget4.4

Vax Mach Air Energise Corded Upright Vacuum

A light, capable corded upright for around £69: the cheapest sensible deep-clean machine.

Vax Mach Air Energise Corded Upright Vacuum Cleaner

If you want a proper corded upright for as little as possible, the Vax Mach Air Energise does the job for around £69. It is lighter than many uprights, which makes it easier to push and carry, has a decent bin and the constant corded suction that deep-cleans carpet, and comes from a trusted UK brand. For a straightforward, affordable deep-clean vacuum without pet-specific extras, it covers the essentials well.

At this price you miss the lift-away canister and premium pet features, so it is less ideal for heavy stairs use or serious pet hair. But the core job, strong, unlimited-runtime carpet cleaning, is delivered cheaply and from a brand that stands behind it. If you have lots of stairs or pets, the Shark or the Vax Pet Max are worth more; as the cheapest sensible corded upright here, this is honest value for general cleaning.

What we like

  • Cheap, around £69
  • Lighter than many uprights
  • Constant corded suction, trusted brand

What we'd change

  • No lift-away or pet extras
  • Less ideal for heavy stairs or pet hair

Buy this if: you want the cheapest sensible corded upright for deep cleaning.

Best for Stairs & Pets4.5

Hoover HL4 Car & Pet Upright (2-in-1 Lift-Away)

A 2-in-1 lift-away Hoover built around pets, stairs and the car, with the canister that detaches.

Hoover HL4 Car&Pet Upright Vacuum Cleaner 2-in-1 Lift Away

If stairs, the car and pet hair are your priorities, the Hoover HL4 is built for exactly that. Its 2-in-1 lift-away design lets the canister detach so you carry just the lightweight unit up the stairs, onto furniture and out to the car, rather than heaving a whole upright around, and the pet tools tackle hair on carpets and upholstery. For homes with lots of stairs and animals, that flexibility is the main thing you want from an upright.

As a lift-away pet machine it costs more than the basic uprights, and it is still a corded vacuum you move between sockets. But the detachable canister genuinely solves the stairs-and-car problem that makes plain uprights awkward, and the pet tools earn their place in animal homes. If your cleaning is mostly flat, open carpet, a simpler upright is enough; if stairs, the car and pets dominate, this lift-away Hoover is the pick.

What we like

  • 2-in-1 lift-away for stairs and car
  • Pet tools for hair
  • Flexible above-floor cleaning

What we'd change

  • Dearer than basic uprights
  • Still corded, swap sockets

Buy this if: you want a detachable lift-away upright for stairs, the car and pet hair.

Ignore the kPa numbers here too

As with cordless vacuums, you will see big "kPa" suction claims, especially from unknown brands. They are marketing and do not reflect real cleaning, which depends on airflow, brush-roll design, the seal and filtration as much as peak suction. Judge an upright on brand reputation, real reviews, the features above and how it performs, not on who claims the biggest number.

Established vacuum brands are judged on real-world results rather than a spec-sheet figure, which is why they rarely shout the loudest kPa. Trust performance over the number.

Common myths, corrected

  • "Cordless has made uprights obsolete." No. For large, heavily carpeted homes and deep cleaning, a corded upright's unlimited runtime and constant strong suction still win. Cordless is about convenience, not out-cleaning a good upright on deep carpet.
  • "Uprights are useless on stairs." Plain ones are awkward; a lift-away upright solves it by detaching the canister. If you have stairs, buy lift-away.
  • "Bagless is always better." It is cheaper to run, but bagged is more hygienic for allergy sufferers. Choose by whether anyone in the home has allergies.
  • "Higher kPa means a better upright." No. kPa is marketing. Airflow, brush design and filtration matter more; judge on real-world performance.

What we’d skip

  • Buying a corded upright if you have a small home or mostly hard floors. There, a cordless stick is lighter, comfier and convenient enough, and you do not need the upright's deep-carpet power. Match the vacuum to your home: uprights earn their place in big, carpeted houses.
  • Choosing a plain upright if you have lots of stairs or a car to clean. Lugging a whole upright around is the thing people hate about them. A lift-away (2-in-1) model detaches the canister so you carry just the light part, which is well worth having for stairs and the car.
  • Picking bagless by default if anyone has allergies. Bagless emptying releases a cloud of dust, whereas a bagged machine seals and bins the dust without exposure. For allergy and asthma households, bagged is the more hygienic choice despite the bag cost.
  • Choosing on the kPa suction number. As with cordless, those figures are marketing and do not reflect real cleaning, which depends on airflow, brush design and filtration. Judge on brand reputation and real reviews instead.
  • Skipping anti-hair-wrap in a pet or long-hair home. Without it you spend ages cutting tangled hair off the brush roll of a powerful upright. It is worth prioritising, just as it is on a cordless.

Frequently asked questions

Is a corded upright vacuum better than cordless?

For large, heavily carpeted homes and deep cleaning, yes: a corded upright has unlimited runtime, a bigger bin and strong, constant suction that cordless sticks cannot sustain. Cordless wins on convenience, light weight and grab-and-go use, and is better for smaller or hard-floored homes. They are different tools: choose an upright for deep-clean power in a big carpeted home, cordless for everyday convenience. Many homes keep one of each.

What is a lift-away upright vacuum?

A lift-away, or 2-in-1, upright has a canister and motor that detach from the floor head, so you can carry just the lightweight part, with the hose and tools, up the stairs, onto furniture and out to the car, instead of lugging the whole upright. It fixes the classic weakness of uprights, which is being awkward on stairs and above-floor. If you have stairs or a car to clean, lift-away is well worth having.

Bagged or bagless vacuum, which is better?

Bagless has no bags to buy so it is cheaper to run, but emptying the bin can be dusty and you must clean or replace filters regularly. Bagged is more hygienic, especially for allergy and asthma sufferers, because the dust seals in a bag you bin whole without a dust cloud, at the ongoing cost of buying bags. For most people bagless is fine; for allergy households, bagged is the more hygienic choice.

Do upright vacuums work on hard floors?

Most modern uprights clean hard floors as well as carpet, often with a brush-roll on/off setting or a hard-floor mode so they do not scatter debris. That said, uprights are at their best on carpet, which is their core strength. If your home is mostly or entirely hard floors, a cordless stick or a cylinder vacuum is often lighter and more manoeuvrable, so consider whether you need an upright's deep-carpet power at all.

Are upright vacuums good for pet hair?

The right ones are excellent, as they have strong, constant suction for hair embedded in carpet. Look for an anti-hair-wrap brush so hair does not tangle around the roller, pet-specific tools for upholstery and stairs, good HEPA filtration for dander, and ideally lift-away for getting hair off stairs and sofas. A Shark upright with anti-hair-wrap and lift-away is our pick for pet homes for exactly these reasons.

How heavy are upright vacuums?

Heavier than cordless sticks, since they pack a bigger motor, bin and the whole assembly into one unit you push along, which is part of the trade for their deep-clean power. Weight varies, and lighter models exist, but the main hassle is usually carrying an upright up stairs. That is exactly what lift-away solves, letting you detach and carry just the light canister. If weight and stairs concern you, prioritise a lighter model with lift-away.

Do the kPa suction numbers matter on uprights?

No more than on cordless vacuums. The big "kPa" figures, especially from unknown brands, are marketing and do not reflect real cleaning, which depends on airflow, brush-roll design, the seal and filtration as well as peak suction. Established brands are judged on real-world performance and reviews rather than headline numbers. Choose an upright on brand reputation, reviews and features, not on who claims the biggest kPa.

How often should I clean or replace the filter?

Check your machine's guidance, but as a rule, wash or replace filters regularly, roughly every few months for washable filters with normal use, and more often in pet or dusty homes. A clogged filter is the most common cause of an upright losing suction, so keeping it clean restores most "lost" power. Let washable filters dry fully before refitting, and replace non-washable ones on the maker's schedule to keep suction and filtration up.
